| Age reversal or regaining youth has been the quest of mankind for a long time. From the years of yore, there have been many attempts to unravel the secret of eternal youth. A team of physicians from Chennai has made an attempt to unravel the secret of regaining youth through the science of Ayurveda. Dr Nedungadi V. Haridas, a renowned and experienced Ayurvedic physician based in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, has pioneered a conventional treatment technique on the lines of Charka Samhita and Ashtamga Hridaya, which can “bring down” the age |

| of a patient by 15 years in a matter of four months. This technique, called Kuti Praveshika, which literally translates into entering a cottage for the purpose of rejuvenation, is based on Rasayana Chikitsa theories. Rasayana Chikitsa calls for purification of dhatus, the seven elements in the body beginning from Rasa (plasma) to Sukra (sex element) is achieved. The treatment results in rejuvenation of the body giving vital energy, compensates for wear and tear due to age and diseases and bequeaths the gift of health wrapped in longevity to a person who opts for it. Unlike other wellness techniques that focus only on rejuvenation of physical body, Rasayana Chikitsa highlights the well being of psyche (mind) with strict restrictions on diet, thoughts and conduct. This technique is responsible for longevity, outstanding memory, intelligence par excellence, health, youth, complexion, melodious voice, strength of body and sense organs, power of expressions, vigor etc. |
Says Dr. Nedungadi “there have been many claims about age reversal technique which finds a place in many Ayurvedic texts. But the need for proper documentation of the same is what prompted us to undertake this research study. Right from the experimental stages, every aspect of the study has been documented. Also, I have involved a panel of renowned and knowledgeable physicians and astrologer in this study to ensure the authenticity of the study.” The treatment, however, is administered only on persons with sattvic nature (a person who has good control of his mind). “This is mandatory because during the tenure of the treatment, the person is subjected to a lot of mental strain owing to hormonal changes and hence the patient should possess maximum quality of mental control; in fact, the treatment is not administered on a person with an impulsive nature,” says Dr Nedungadi. And in line with this logic, the study was conducted on an Italian monk aged 65 years who after the treatment showed significant hormonal and metabolic changes as that of a 50-year old in a matter of four months.
The Kuti or cottage
The Kuti or the cottage used for treatment plays a vital role in the whole exercise. The cottage, built based on vaastu shaastra (the science of building houses), is circular or square shape with three inner rooms covered by one roof. The innermost room, with a floor spread with cow dung, has only minimum exposure to light, temperature and wind. The hut has a serene atmosphere with pots planted with natural flowers and a good garden outside to bring positive vibration.
Treatment method
It takes about 120 days to complete the whole treatment. Before the patient is admitted to the hut, all Panchakarma treatments are administered. These pre-medications are a must as Rasayana resets the biochemical changes at the hormonal level and controls the metabolism of the body system. |
This normalizes the bio-transformation of the body constituents starting from plasma (Rasa) up to the sex elements (sukra) and finally helps to derive the Ojas (strength), the indicator of perfect health. The various regimes of the Kuti Praveshika treatment and their tenure are: All schedules of Abhyangam, Swedanam, Snehapanam, Dhara and Pancha shodana karma (52 days), Sirovasthi (7 days), Nasyam (7 days), Snehapanam (5 days), Pre Vamanam (3 days), Vamanam (1 day), Peyadhi Kramam (9 days), Virechanam (1 day), Peyadhi Kramam (8 days), Vasthi (8 days), Rasayanam treatment (41days), Coming out procedure (7 days), Udvarthanam and Sneham (14 days).
During the last leg of the treatment, the patient has to stay indoors for 41 days taking pre-digested medicated tonic. Only very few visitors such as an attendee, a medical officer, a physician and the chief coordinator are allowed. To overcome the mental strain of isolation, during this period the patient is encouraged to meditate, do japa (chanting) and archana coupled with controlled level of pranayama and light yoga postures. The hut has no television or books and only the sound of devotional music is allowed inside the temperature-controlled hut which is insulated from outside light and air. “This is the most difficult phase of the treatment. And there have been many instances when people had come out of the hut in just about 20 days or so. This phase involves a lot of mental strain as a person has to sit in solitary confinement in a dark room. It is for this reason the sattvic nature of the patient is put to test before the whole exercise,” says Dr Nedungadi.
The Impact
However, the impact of the strict regime was tremendous. At the end of the treatment, the patient lost 13.6 kg without any feeling of tiredness and showed good reduction in his blood glucose level, blood pressure and fat percentage levels. More interestingly, arterial thickness – an indicator of potential heart disease – was reduced with his testosterone hormone levels going up. Amazingly, the patient, who never had body hair, started growing black hair on his chest.

| His memory power too improved and he could remember his schoolmates, whose names he could not remember earlier. Neurological studies conducted on the patients revealed that the rigorous regime of the patient had resulted in significant hormonal changes in the person had helped in expelling anti-oxidants. This in turn, had resulted in rejuvenation and weight loss. The pioneering treatment was also monitored by noted allopathic practitioners Dr V. Mohan, a leading diabetologist, and Dr. K. Girish, a renowned neurosurgeon. "The decrease in blood sugar level was expected with the drop in body mass, but there were some other changes which were dramatic," says Dr. Mohan, who did endocrinological tests and Doppler study on the patient before and after the treatment. |
